If you're shopping for a gun safe, the first fork in the road is the lock: biometric (fingerprint) or electronic keypad. Both beat a traditional dial for speed, but they solve different problems. Here's how to decide.
Biometric safes: built for speed
A biometric lock reads your fingerprint and opens in about one second. That matters most for a home-defense setup, where fumbling a code under stress is a real failure point. Modern sensors store multiple fingerprints, so a spouse or trusted family member can register too.
The tradeoff is that fingerprint sensors are electronics: they need battery changes, and wet, dirty, or very dry fingers can cause misreads. Every quality biometric safe includes a backup entry method (usually a keypad or key) for exactly this reason. Treat the backup as a requirement, not a bonus.
Keypad safes: the reliability pick
An electronic keypad has fewer failure modes. A code works regardless of the condition of your hands, and there's nothing to calibrate. Entry takes a few seconds longer, and a code can be shared or observed, which is worth thinking about if kids are in the house.
What matters more than the lock
- Steel and construction. Look for solid steel bodies and pry-resistant doors. A great lock on thin steel is security theater.
- Fire rating. If the safe will also hold documents, cash, or backup drives, a fire-resistant model protects against the more statistically likely event: a house fire, not a break-in.
- Capacity, honestly measured. Rifle safes fill up fast once you add optics, cases, and ammo. Whatever you think you need, go up one size. A 5.5 cubic foot tall safe fits long guns; 7.8+ cubic feet gives you room for rifles plus a valuables shelf.
- Bolt-down capability. A safe that can be carried off isn't a safe. Anchor holes and included hardware should be standard.
