A storage shed is a 10-to-20-year purchase, and the material decides how those years go. Steel, resin, and wood each have a distinct failure mode — pick based on your climate and what you're storing, not just price.

Galvanized steel: most storage per dollar

Steel sheds deliver the largest footprint for the least money and are the only realistic option at garage scale (our 22x23 ft double garage barn is effectively a second garage). Galvanized panels resist rust, but steel's weak points are condensation and wind: anchor it properly and ventilate it if you're storing anything moisture-sensitive. Best for: mowers, bikes, tools, seasonal equipment, and anyone maximizing square footage.

Resin: zero maintenance

Resin (high-density plastic) never rusts, rots, or needs paint, and it shrugs off humidity — the right answer in coastal or high-rain climates. The tradeoff is structural: resin panels don't love heavy wall-mounted loads, and large sizes get expensive. Best for: garden tools, cushions, pool equipment, and buyers who never want to think about upkeep.

Wood: the premium look

A wood shed with a proper waterproof roof looks like a small building, not a box, and you can shelve and mount anything to the framing. It's also the only material that demands maintenance: stain or seal every few years. Best for: visible backyard placement where appearance matters.

Three mistakes to avoid

  • Buying the size you need today. Sheds fill to capacity within a year. Buy one size up — the cost difference is small compared to replacing the whole shed.
  • Skipping the floor. A shed on bare ground wicks moisture into everything you store. Choose a model with an included floor kit or budget for a gravel/paver base.
  • Ignoring local rules. Many municipalities require permits above a certain footprint (often 100–120 sq ft). Check before ordering a large unit.
